The Tiguan runs on a turbocharged 2.0-liter engine with four cylinders. It can provide you with 184 horsepower, making the drive around New Bedford a little more exciting. Front-wheel drive is standard, but you'll also have the option to get your SUV equipped with 4MOTION all-wheel drive. With this system in place, your vehicle will respond to changing conditions, and power can be distributed between the front and rear wheels accordingly. When the road ahead is slippery, having all-wheel drive can give you a significant advantage.

VW has paired the Tiguan's engine with an eight-speed automatic transmission. If you're someone who enjoys being in control over shifting, you can utilize Tiptronic mode, in which you can manually shift. There are several available driving modes for you to consider, as well. Snow Mode encourages the engine to maintain a lower RPM range to optimize your traction, Off-Road Mode can improve your ability to tackle rough terrain, and Off-Road Custom Mode can be set up according to your preferences.

If you're like many of our customers who are concerned about the fuel consumption, you'll be pleased to learn that the Tiguan can travel almost 30 miles on a single gallon. Front-wheel drive Tiguans have an estimated fuel economy of 22 city/29 highway miles per gallon, and their all-wheel-drive counterparts get an estimated 20 city/27 highway miles per gallon to get you from Warwick to East Providence.

From the way the Tiguan has been designed to all of the sensors built into it, it's evident that Volkswagen has concentrated on safety. All Tiguan trims have a rearview camera system to give you a clear picture of what's behind you while you're backing up. These SUVs also have front and rear crumple zones that can absorb some energy generated in collisions. If you're ever involved in an accident where your airbags deploy, the Intelligent Crash Response system can unlock your doors, turn on your hazard lights, and turn off your fuel pump to make sure nothing else goes wrong and that you can get the help you need.

The driver-assist technology in the Tiguan includes post-collision braking. If you're in an accident and can't keep full pressure on the brakes, your vehicle will make sure you slow down. More advanced features are available, and they all work to keep you out of harm's way. For instance, blind-spot monitoring gives you a better idea of when it's safe to change lanes, adaptive cruise control adjusts your speed so that you'll stay a safe distance behind the vehicle in front of you, and automatic high beams can make it easier to see when you're on dark roads. Forward collision warning can warn you when it seems like you're about to rear-end another vehicle, and autonomous emergency braking can stop you so that this hopefully doesn't happen.

Interior and Technology

The Volkswagen Tiguan can be described as comfortable and practical. It can come as a traditional two-row SUV, or it can have a third row with two extra seats. Many of our customers end up taking advantage of this opportunity to have more seating accommodations, and if you do so, you'll easily be able to fold those seats down when they're not needed. When the third row is in use, there's a small amount of storage space in the back, ideal for quick trips around town. The Tiguan is quite versatile, and you can lower the second and third rows down when you need to make room for cargo. There are 73.5 cubic feet of cargo capacity when you do this, and you could always use the available roof rails. Many upscale features, such as a panoramic sunroof and leather seats, are available to give you a premium experience as you commute to New Bedford.

VW uses Car-Net technology in its infotainment systems. The Tiguan comes standard with Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and Wi-Fi hotspot capability. Higher trims of the SUV have a digital cockpit, navigation, a Fender premium audio system, and wireless charging. The touchscreen system has a 6.5-inch display, and it's upgraded to an eight-inch model starting with the mid-level trims.

Trim Options

The S trim is the base model, and it's available with 4MOTION all-wheel drive if you think you'll need the extra traction. These models have a 6.5-inch touchscreen with smartphone connectivity, which is a significant advantage considered they're entry-level vehicles. Upgrading to the SE gives you leatherette seating surfaces, wireless charging, and an eight-inch touchscreen. The SE R-Line has unique badging and 20-inch alloy wheels, along with a panoramic sunroof. The SEL comes with remote start and adaptive cruise control, and the fully equipped SEL Premium R-Line with 4MOTION is at the top of our line-up.
